Environment

Captain Planet might have been on to something

First and foremost, I protect the environment.

The Environmental Consumer

I am the founder and Executive Director of The Environmental Consumer, a 501(c)3 nonprofit designed to support consumers as they take the next step to reduce their resource usage and environmental impact via tools, databases, and guidance that inform, enable, reinforce, and communicate incremental and personally achievable lifestyle changes.

Center for Watershed Sciences, UC Davis

I split my time evenly between my work on The Environmental Consumer and my work with the Center for Watershed Sciences at UC Davis. My first project there, which is now wrapping up, is a system called PISCES that aids in the tracking and analysis of the distributions of native fish taxa. I will also be working on assessing the hydrologic vulnerability of Sierra meadows. If it's available, you can find code for these projects over at the programming section.

Americorps/Sierra Nevada Alliance

In 2010, I served with Americorps at the Sierra Nevada Alliance, a nonprofit conservation and capacity-building organization based in South Lake Tahoe for community and environmental partners throughout the Sierra. In my time there, I wrote documents (such as the Sierra Climate Change Toolkit), published a regular newsletter, led meetings, and conducted cleanups of area creeks.

1Sky

In two stints, I spent about 9 months working at 1Sky, a highly collaborative campaign for federal climate change legislation. As a member of their policy team, I analyzed legislation, current events and policy-based solutions to climate change. 1Sky is an amazing organization and is rapidly advancing the discourse on climte change and the steps the United States must take to re-engage the world community and do its part. 1Sky has since merged with 350.org to focus on both national and international action. Please get involved by visiting 350.org

The Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program

From 2006 through early 2009 I worked as IT staff for the University of California's Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (SAREP) where I designed posters, aided staff with desktop support, managed equipment, built computers, and more.
